1. Ruby Sparks
Description: A novelist struggling with writer’s block finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then willing her into existence.
Stars: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan(writer too!), Chris Messina
Why it doesn’t suck: it’s such a creative, magical idea, but even in it’s fantasy elements relays such truth and struggle to real relationships. That even with the perfect partner, there will never be a perfect relationship.
Watch If You Liked: Stranger than Fiction, 500 days of Summer
2. Celeste and Jesse Forever
Description: A divorcing couple tries to maintain their friendship while they both pursue other people. (Lee Toland Krieger)
Stars: Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg, Elijah Wood
Why it Doesn’t Suck: Jones’ writing and acting in this is so spot on and relatable. There are kind of sad feels that will bring you back to that feel of ‘awh shit break ups suck’. Plus, awkward-omg-dont-say-that Michael Scott-ish moments galore.
Description: Amélie is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love.
Stars: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz
Why it doesn’t suck: Amélie doesn’t bother to adjust to the 21st century at all. It revels in its Eurodisneyfication of Montmartre and it is for all the dreamers.
Watch If You Liked: Chocolat
4. Short Term 12
Description: A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend
Stars: Brie Larson, Frantz Turner, John Gallagher Jr.
Why it doesn’t suck: You’re going to cry during this movie. You’re going to say “Crap, why is the world so evil?”. But you’re also going to laugh, and find hope, and realize for every bad person there is two good people.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You
Description: Kat Stratford is beautiful, smart and quite abrasive to most of her fellow teens, meaning that she doesn’t attract many boys. Unfortunately for her younger sister, Bianca, house rules say that she can’t date until Kat has a boyfriend, so strings are pulled to set the dour damsel up for a romance. Soon Kat crosses paths with handsome new arrival Patrick Verona. Will Kat let her guard down enough to fall for the effortlessly charming Patrick?
Stars: Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Why it doesn’t suck: It’s charming, it’s dripping with sarcasm and preppiness and there’s a reason why it has acquired something of a legendary status amongst Rom-com movies.
Watch If You Liked: Music & Lyrics, My Best Friend’s Wedding
6. Life After Beth
Description: A young man’s recently deceased girlfriend mysteriously returns from the dead, but he slowly realizes she is not the way he remembered her.
Stars: Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly, Matthew Gray Gubler
Why it Doesn’t Suck: it’s too twisted and unique to be just a romance or to be just be a comedy. It’s Edward scissor-handy with a dark humour that is clever. Its blatant ‘gags’ still come off as one-of-a-kind.
7. Friends With Kids
Description: Two best friends decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic, so they can avoid the toll kids can take on romantic relationships.
Stars: Jennifer Westfeldt, Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph
Why It Doesn’t Suck: For one, it’s an all star comedic cast, that each show different relationships before and after kids. It’s a long movie, but worth every minute.
Watch If You Liked: Your Sister’s Sister, Celeste And Jesse Forever, Young Adult
8. Giant Mechanical Man
Description: An offbeat romantic comedy about a silver-painted street performer and the soft spoken zoo worker who falls for him.
Stars: Jenna Fischer, Chris Messina, Topher Grace
Why It Doesn’t Suck: it’s charming as all else. It’s about feeling lost in life and trying to find what will make you feel found – and if you haven’t felt that way, hell you’re a lucky one. Messina is amazing, Fisher’s character in this is as lovable as Pam.
9. Save the Date
Description: Sarah begins to confront her shortcomings after she rejects her boyfriend’s hasty proposal and soon finds herself in a rebound romance. Meanwhile, her sister Beth is immersed in the details of her wedding.
Stars: Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Martin Star
Why it doesn’t suck: It’s realistic. Sometimes feelings come, and sometimes they go. Life and love are messy, people are selfish, and unlike most other rom-coms this movie doesn’t try to hide that.
Watch If You Liked: Garden State, The Kids Are Alright
Description: When a girl attending a Christian high school becomes pregnant, she finds herself ostracized and demonized, as all of her former friends turn on her.
Stars: Jena Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Patrick Fugit
Why it doesn’t suck: It’s actually funny and majorily satirizes the overzealous christian lifestyle every chance it gets. Despite the blatant parody, it’s sweet and leaves you thinking and smiling.
Watch If You Liked: Jawbreaker, Sunshine Cleaning
11. Moonrise Kingdom
Description: A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them.

Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy
Why It Doesn’t Suck: because it’s magical/sci-fi elements don’t even touch what makes this movie spectacular. It’s charming, it’s lovely, it’s ending will break you and inspire you.
